CREATING AN AVENUE TO EXPRESS LOVE
SecondFirst Church’s Community Mural Fundraiser is a Success!
With one day to spare, donations from more than 100 people, businesses and organizations over six weeks helped us hit our $30,000 Kickstarter goal! This was possible in large part due to a matching $15,000 donation from an anonymous sponsor. We thank everyone for giving their dollars to help build this project!
There will be three free public workshops for youth or adults at SecondFirst Church led by artist Tia Richardson to get input for the design. The mural images with their light will show the life in the community and draw out our common good. The workshops will be open to people from all sides of Rockford from all backgrounds.
One workshop per person. Sign-up is first-come first-served. To register, choose a date and sign up at one of the links below. Childcare will be available with reservation by calling (815) 963-8431. For questions about workshop specifics contact Tia Richardson at (414) 793-6825 or firstname.lastname@example.org
DATES AND TIMES
Tuesday Oct 15th 10am-12pm (Age 18+)
Thursday 10/17, 6-8pm (Age 14 – adult)
Tuesday 10/22 6:30-7:30pm (Ages 7-13)
People are offered the chance to express challenges they see that need to be improved in their community; think of some small ways anyone can help make it better, and imagine Rockford’s future as a result of these efforts. What do we want to see and feel? Every member of the community is like an ingredient in a pot of soup and the flavors will come together in the artist’s final design!
A public design reveal will be announced in the coming weeks for everyone to see how their own ideas were incorporated into the design and give feedback if needed. If you’re not able to make it to one of the workshops there will be lots of opportunities for family-friendly ‘paint-by-numbers’ in the coming weeks!
This project will be a lasting symbol that reminds us of our common good.
SecondFirst Church with Jeremiah Development is partnering with community mural artist Tia Richardson and Rockford residents to paint a 1,000 sq ft mural on the outside wall of the church gymnasium.
“SecondFirst Church invites all of Rockford to participate in this community healing art. Let’s come together to imagine a future of hope, peace and equity, and have that reflected on the west facing wall. Built for the community, inside the gym hosts events that draw every type of Rockford person. Now let’s put that spirit on the wall outside to inspire generations to come!” Rev. Rebecca White-Newgren, SecondFirst Church
We want to give people a chance to beautify their community in a fun, hands-on way. In creative workshops, Tia offers people the chance to express what challenges are important to them, ways of improving them, and imagine a better future. The design is made with these ideas. Then everyone can be part of history by ‘painting-by-numbers’! All can join the experience – no art skills needed!
